Bill Riedel was a standout in basketball, track, and football for the University of Dubuque in the early 1940's. The Islip, NY native was an outstanding guard on Dubuque's powerful basketball teams before World War II. Riedel earned First Team All-Iowa Conference honors on the basketball court in 1939-40, 1940-41, and 1941-42. He led UD to the 1940-41 IIAC Championship with a record of 11-2 in conference. The Spartans posted a 51-18 overall record in Riedel's four years. He was later chosen to the elite 10-man Iowa Conference All-Time Basketball Team for the years 1922-61 by the Des Moines Register.
Riedel was also a member of the 1941 IIAC Champion Track & Field team, contributing a first place finish in the 2 mile run. In football he was a member of the 1940 IIAC champions who finished 7-1.
Following graduation he served as a physical education instructor in the Air Force and later as physical education director for the Dubuque YMCA. He currently resides in Dubuque and is the owner of the Dubuque Mattress Company.
