Earl "Duke" Gantenbein (C'49) was an all conference end in 1947 for the University of Dubuque after returning from war with a Purple Heart. The Dubuque native enlisted in the Army Corps of Engineers in 1942. Gantenbein was one of a group of five starters who started for both the 1946-47 (10-1) and 1947-48 (11-0) teams that each won the Iowa Conference title.
He graduated from UD with a BA in Physical Education before earning his MA in Physical Education from the University of Iowa. Gantenbein taught and coached at Muscatine High School from 1950-1967, winning the Iowa High School Boys Basketball Championship in 1954 with an outstanding 23-2 record. He was inducted into the Dubuque Fast Pitch Hall of Fame in 1983.
