Nancy (Nagel) Leonard ('88)
Nancy (Nagel) Leonard graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1988 with her bachelor of arts degree in English and a minor in Spanish. During her college career, she played on the women’s tennis team, being named MVP her senior year. Her love for tennis began the day she found her father’s old wooden tennis racket in the garage when she was 12. Nancy competed for Hempstead High School and played in various competitions outside of the school’s program. She was also a member of the Dubuque Tennis Association for eight years, where she competed in singles’ and mixed doubles’ competitions.
After graduating from UD, Nancy’s first teaching job was in Oxford Junction & Olin (Iowa) Middle School/High School. She now lives in Dubuque with her husband of 28 years, Jim. This year, she is celebrates her 30th year teaching Spanish at Wahlert Catholic High School. Nancy was awarded the Eagle’s Club “Eye on the Future” Teacher of the Year in 2013-14. In her free time, Nancy enjoys spending time with her two sons, Mike and Nate, and serving at her church. This past year, Nancy served as the volunteer assistant coach for girls’ tennis at Wahlert. The team placed second in their division at the state tournament. Nancy plans to continue coaching next season. She is also involved in planning and chaperoning trips to Spain for Wahlert students and leads the knitting club where they donate their products to local shelters and hospitals.
