Robert Schiers ('42)

Basketball - Football - Tennis

Robert "Bucky" Schiers was a four-year letterwinner in three different sports - football, basketball, and tennis at the University of Dubuque in the early 1940's. In football he quarterbacked the Spartans to a perfect 7-0 record and league championship in 1940 as a junior, earning All-Iowa Conference honors along the way. As a senior he was captain of the team and led Dubuque to a 6-1-1 record. As both a junior and senior he finished second in the Iowa Conference in scoring, recording 43 points on five touchdowns, 10 extra points and a field goal as a junior and 49 points on the strength of seven touchdowns his senior season.

Schiers was also a standout basketball player, helping Dubuque to a 13-3 record as a sophomore, 15-3 record and conference championship as a junior, and 15-4 mark as a senior. In tennis he led the Spartan netters to a 10-1 dual meet record as a senior, the most victories of any major sport at the university that season.

During his college career from 1938-42 he was a member of the Athenaean Fraternity, the "D" Booster Club and was listed in WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES. He served as class president his junior year. A native of Dubuque, Schiers graduated with a degree in commerce and was a veteran of World War II.
