Athletics - Cross Country - Track & Field
William "George" French (C'56/MDiv'63) is one of three University of Dubuque track performers to win the Iowa Conference title in a single event four straight years. French was a perfect 4-4 in the 1-Mile Run at the IIAC Outdoor Championships, taking the title from 1953-56. He also went back-to-back in the 2-Mile Run, winning in 1954 and 1955. French held the school record in the Outdoor 1,500m Run for six years before a student-athlete he was coaching beat his time.
French also ran Cross Country at UD before it was recognized as a collegiate sport. Following graduation he became the Head Men's Cross Country Coach, leading the Spartans to an IIAC Championship in 1959 (the first year of collegiate competition). The '59 Spartans recorded a perfect score of 15. They also took Second Place at the AAU Championships and Sixth Place at the NAIA Championships.
