Watkins Named IIAC Performer of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that University of Dubuque volleyball player Klaudia Basierak and Coe College football player Jared McNutt have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 21, 2012. The Conference also recognized a total of 11 Performers of the Week across six of the league's fall championship sports.

For the second time this season University of Dubuque forward Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) has been named Women’s Soccer Offensive Performer of the Week. Watkins started the week off with a goal and two assists in the Spartans 7-0 win over Cornell. She capped the week with two goals against Buena Vista as UD went on to win 3-1. Watkins second goal at B.V. was her 29th as a Spartan, moving her into fifth place all-time.

Watkins has been instrumental in the Spartans eight game unbeaten streak, scoring ten goals to lead UD to a 7-0-1 record. In 16 games played, she leads UD with 12 goals, 4 assists, 28 points, 60 shots and 29 shots on goal. Watkins is currently fifth in the IIAC in points (28) and goals (12) as well as tied for eight in assists (4).

The Iowa Conference previously honored Watkins on October 1, 2012 when she scored five goals in two games. She was also honored as a freshman in 2010 for scoring three goal week ending September 26th.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will take on Iowa Conference leading #23 Loras College (14-4-0, 6-0-0) on Tuesday night at Loras. Game time is 6:00 pm. The game is the last regular season contest for each team as the IIAC Tournament will begin on Saturday, October 27th. UD will be making its ninth consecutive appearance in the post season tournament.
