UD Mediation Team Ranked Fourth Nationally

On November 2-3, 2012, the University of Dubuque mediation team traveled to Brenau University, Gainesville, Georgia, for the 13th Annual National Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament. The event attracted schools from throughout the United States: the University of San Diego, Boston University, University of Sioux Falls, and University of Texas-Dallas were among those competing. This was the deepest, most talented field yet - 40 teams comprising approximately 150 individual competitors.
Even with stiff competition, the University of Dubuque finished fourth in the nation. This is a tremendous accomplishment for any school, but especially for a school in only its second year of competition, and reflects favorably on the University and its students. Other local schools competing were Loras College and UW-Platteville.
Each November the International Academy of Dispute Resolution sponsors an undergraduate competitive contest, the National Intercollegiate Mediation Tournament. The intent of the tournament is to give students a real-life experience as mediator, an attorney, and client. Three students make up a team, and each must participate as mediator in one of three preliminary rounds. Students participating have the opportunity to receive All-American recognition. Team members were Ryan Stodden (Sr., Galena, IL), Courtney Neenan (Sr., Peosta, IA) and Anna Stoeffler (Jr., Prairie du Chien, WI).
"I'm very proud of the students," said Professor Ben Bartels, Mediation Team Advisor. "They have worked very hard to reach this point. I want to thank the University of Dubuque for supporting co-curricular activities like mediation. I think our success reflects the greater success our University as a whole has had in recent years. Finally, I want to personally thank Professor Mary Lynn Neuhaus from Loras College and Professor John Rink from UW-Platteville for their guidance."
