Spartans Receive Votes for Second Straight Week

Dec 18, 2012 | J.Crane

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team received votes for the second straight week in the D3hoops Top 25. The Spartans 8-1 record equals the best start to a season in school history; the 1996-97 team also started 8-1. The Spartans current seven game winning streak also ties the 1996-97 team for the most consecutive wins in school history.

A major reason for the Spartans success has been their ability to control the ball and force turnovers on the defensive side of the court. UD currently ranks 15th in Division III with 15.4 steals per game and 17th in turnover margin at +8.33 per game. Sophomore Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) leads Dubuque with 2.1 steals per game. Allowing the Spartans to take defensive risks is the presence of Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) and her 18 blocks.

On offense, senior Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) leads the Spartans and is second in the Iowa Conference (IIAC) at 16.9 points per game. Whiting scored a career high 31 against UW-Platteville in the Spartans only loss of the season. Whiting's 31 is also tied for the highest single game point total in the IIAC this season.

Remakel, Springer, Whiting, Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead), and Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) have each started all nine games this season.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will host the UD Holiday Classic on Friday, December 28th and Saturday December 29th. UD will open the tournament against Aurora University at 6:00 pm. St. Mary's College (IN) and UW-River Falls will then play at 8:00 pm. The winners of each game will square off at 3:00 pm with the two losing teams playing before hand at 1:00 pm.
