CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that University of Dubuque basketball player Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill. / Woodstock) and Simpson College basketball player Austin Hennings have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 3, 2013. The Conference also named Performers of the Week in eight sports.

Whiting continued her outstand senior campaign with 54 points in two Spartan victories. She started the week off with 23 points including the game winner with 2.1 seconds left against Wartburg. Whiting was also instrumental in the Spartans victory over Coe with 31 points on 10-13 shooting from the field and 10-11 from the free throw line. She also surpassed 1,500 career points with her first basket of the game against the Kohawks. Her 31 points against Coe extended her streak of 20 or more points to 11 games and 15 or more points in 15 consecutive games.

On the season, Whiting has led the Spartans in scoring in 17 of 21 games including the last 12 contests. Whiting’s 21.9 points per game ranks sixth in Division III. Her 50.3% field goal percentage ranks 43rd in the nation and fourth in the IIAC. In IIAC only games, Whiting leads the league with 27.0 points per game, more than five points better than the next closest scorer. As a team, the Spartans are 47th in DIII at 70.1 points per game. UD has also done an outstanding job protecting the basketball while also forcing turnovers on the defensive side of the court as they lead the IIAC with a +5.48 turnover margin.

Whiting has now earned the IIAC Women’s Basketball Performer of the Week two times in her time at UD. She also won the award on January 22, 2012.
