Spartans Tie School Record with 16th Win

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team tied a school record for wins in a season with their 16th win on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans 66-43 victory over Central College (10-13, 3-9) was the 12th straight overall win and 13th consecutive win at home versus the Dutch.  UD improved to 8-1 at home this season. Dubuque is 16-7 overall and tied for third place in the Iowa Conference at 6-6.

The Spartans would lead 32-20 at the half while holding a 20-4 advantage on points in the paint. UD would also hold a 9-0 advantage in points off turnovers, 6-0 on second chance points and 8-2 on fast break points.  The Spartans starting backcourt of Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) and Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) would combine for 20 points at the break. Dubuque started the game on a 14-4 run over the first eight plus minutes.

Whiting, the reigning Iowa Conference Female Athlete of the Week, finished with a game high 28 points including three three-pointers. She extended her steak of 20+ point games to 13 games and has scored 15 or more points in 17 straight contests. The senior guard also moved back atop the IIAC scoring list at 22.2 points per game overall and 26.7 in IIAC action.

Making her first start of the season, Schmidt finished with 13 points, four steals, three rebounds, and three assists. JuniorStephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) led the Spartans with six rebounds.

The largest lead of the night for the Spartans would come on the last UD basket of the game as Molly Richardson(Marengo, Ill./Marengo) hit a three with nine seconds left in the game to put the Spartans ahead by 25 points. The UD bench scored 21 points with Krystal Pritchett (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) scoring eight and Alexis Lozano-Dobbs (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) adding five of her own.

Head Coach Mark Noll picked up his 80th career victory.
