Whiting Scores a Pair of Honors

DUBUQUE, IOWA - University of Dubuque Women’s Basketball guard Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) picked up a pair of honors on Monday, February 18th. The senior was selected as the Iowa Conference Women’s Basketball Performer of the Week and chosen for the D3hoops.com Week 13 Team of the Week. Whiting led the Spartans to a 2-0 week including a road victory over #6 Simpson College while averaging 29.0 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game.

Whiting is currently fourth in Division III at 22.6 ppg and leads all of DIII with 214 field goals made. Her two outstanding performances this week pushed her streak of 20+ point games to 15 games and has scored 15 or more points in 19 straight contests. She has scored at least 15 points in 22 of 25 games this season. Whiting scored a career high 38 points on January 5th against Wartburg, the 15th highest point total in DIII this season. She also set a new UD record against Simpson by making 16 free throws in the UD win.

On the season, Whiting has led the Spartans in scoring in 21 of 25 games including the last 16 games. The historic season for Whiting has moved her into third place all-time at UD in career points scored with 1,638 and into first place for career field goals made with 629. She is also sixth in career steals (137) and seventh in career assists (219). Her 568 points this season is second all-time at UD, trailing only Annie Brown who scored 635 points during the 1991-92 season.

Whiting has now earned the IIAC Women’s Basketball Performer of the Week three times in her time at UD. She also won the award on January 22, 2012 and earlier this season on February 4th.

UP NEXT: UD will host Luther College (13-12, 5-9) in the opening round of the 2013 IIAC Tournament on Tuesday, February 19th at 6:00 pm. The Spartans and Norse split the season series with each team winning at home.
