Spartans Storm Into 2nd Round of IIAC Tournament

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's basketball (9-5 in IIAC, 20-6 overall) needed a balanced scoring attack on Tuesday night against the Simpson College Storm (3-11 in IIAC, 7-19 overall) to defeat the visitors 71-63 in Stoltz Sports Center.

The Spartans enter the 2013 IIAC Tournament as the #3-seed, but it was the Storm who continued to keep the contest within their reach. Simpson led early in the game before the Spartans left after the first half of play with a slim eight point lead (33-25). The Spartans despite shooting above 50% from the field and the three point line in the second half were never able to lead by more than 12 points. UD capitalized on their outside shooting where they sank 10-21 attempts from beyond the three point arc. Unfortunately, that was about what they shot at the free throw line, making 11-21 attempts (52.4%) for the game.

Chris Frazier led the quartet of double digit Spartan scorers with a team high 15 points. Andre Norris finished with 14 points and teammates Mitch Michaelis and Jordan Townsend each added 11 points. Townsend collected seven rebounds only to be out done by Lucas Ware who grabbed nine which included eight defensive boards.

Next up for the Spartans is a nice long road trip to #2-seeded Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. Tentatively the contest has been scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7:00 p.m. The weather forecasted across the Midwest for the latter part of the week, might juggle the IIAC Tournament schedule around if mother nature has her way. Please stay tuned to the Iowa Conference and the University of Dubuque website for any further weather announcements this week.
