Spartans Finish 1-3 at Finlandia Dome Tournament

MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN – The University of Dubuque Softball team began the 2013 season on the road at the Finlandia Dome Tournament inside the Superior Dome on the campus of Northern Michigan University.  UD opened the season on Saturday, February 23rd with a season opening loss to Carroll University before rallying in the second game to beat UW-Superior. Dubuque went 0-2 on February 24th with losses to UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls to finish the road trip with a 1-3 record.

Amber Meyer (Cascade, Iowa/Cascade) finished the four games with seven hits in 13 at-bats including a homerun against UW-Oshkosh. Meyer also finished with a team high three runs scored, a batting average of .538, and ten total bases. Senior Susan Danielewski (Lansing, Ill./Thorton Fractional South) finished the weekend with four hits, two runs batted in, and a .364 batting average. Danielewski, Shawna Dole(Dubuque, Iowa/Senior), and Laura Magana (Santa Ana, Calif./Segerstrom) all tied with a team high two RBI. The Spartans finished the weekend a perfect eight for eight in stolen bases with Dole, Meyer, and Caitlin Aulwes (Edgewood, Iowa/Edgewood-Colesburg) all stealing two bases.

Senior Emily Michels (Bellevue, Iowa/Marquette) picked up the win on the mound against UW-Superior. Michels pitched four innings allowing only one hit and striking out four. Dionna Jensen (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) relieved Michels to earn the save. Michels finished the weekend with 12 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings pitched. Danielewski pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in two appearances. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will travel south to Clermont, Fla. for a Spring Trip with ten scheduled games between March 17th and 22nd.
