Spartans Sweep Bethany Lutheran

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – The University of Dubuque Baseball team picked up its first wins of the season on Tuesday morning inside the Metrodome. The Spartan bats awoke in game one with an 11-1 win over Bethany Lutheran. UD rallied late in game two to win 2-1. Dubuque is now 2-6 overall.

Game 1: UD-11, Bethany Lutheran-1   BOX SCORE
The Spartans left little doubt that they came to play in the opener putting up a season high 11 runs on 13 hits. UD scored in each of the first five innings to earn Head Coach Paul Wyczawski his first win as the Spartans coach. Nick Martin (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) picked up the victory on the mound by working seven strong innings while striking out five. Andrew Danna(Antioch, Ill./Antioch) finished the game 2-4 while reaching base four out of five plate appearances and scoring three runs. The two hits for Danna were both extra base hits as he hit his third double and third triple of the year.

Michael Campbell (Clinton, Mo./Clinton), Spencer Kuehn (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills), and Vince Parisi (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) each had two hits in the contest. Kuehn also drove in three runs and hit his third double of the season.

Dubuque did not commit an error in the game.

Game 2: UD-2, Bethany Lutheran-1   BOX SCORE   
UD won a pitchers duel in game two thanks to a strong pitching effort from freshman Tyler Trifiletti (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury). Trifiletti allowed only four hits while striking out four in the complete game effort on the mound. The Spartan bats were held silent until Chris Briggs (Lombard, Ill./Montini) stepped up and drove a ball over the right field wall to tie the ball game at 1-1.

The Spartans rally in the fifth began with a one out double by Martin down the left field line. Briggs followed with a deep fly ball to center field that advanced Martin to third. The relay throw from the Bethany Lutheran shortstop was off target and landed in the UD dugout allowing Martin to score and give Dubuque a 2-1 lead.

Dubuque did not commit an error in the game.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will return to action on Tuesday, March 26 against Clarke University. Game time for the home opener is 3:00 pm. UD and Clarke will play 1 – 9 inning game.
