Spartans Split with #17 Central Dutch

PELLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team remained tied for the Iowa Conference lead after Saturday, despite facing top-ranked Central College Dutch. The #17-ranked Dutch were tied for the league lead at a perfect 4-0 with the Spartans and after Saturday they were still tied after earning a split. The Spartans dropped the opener 2-10 in five innings, but fought back and captured game two in dramatic fashion 5-3. 

At the top of the seventh, UD and Central were tied 2-2 until senior Susie Danielewski hit a homerun to left field and drove home three runs. Shawna Dole got on base with a single through the left side. Amber Meyer was intentionally walked and Danielewski brought in three runs to help the Spartans capture the lead and the win. Central added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Spartans held on for the upset victory. behind the strong arm of pitcher Emily Michels. Michels struck out five and walked just two after facing 32 batters.

It was the second time in a week, the Spartans captured wins against a Top-20 team. UD forced a four way tie in the Iowa Conference. The four teams at the top include: #9 Luther, #15 Coe, #17 Central and unranked University of Dubuque all knotted at 5-1 in league play. The Spartans have a rain postponed make-up date Vs. Luther on Sunday, April 14. Rain is anticipated in Eastern Iowa on Sunday, so please check for any additional postponements.
