Martin Named IIAC Pitcher of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Luther College softball player Becca Girvan and Wartburg College track & field athlete Jonas Elusme have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 14, 2013. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in six spring sports -- baseball, softball, men's tennis, men's golf and men's and women's track & field.

University of Dubuque senior Nick Martin (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) was named IIAC Baseball (Pitcher) Performer of the Week. Martin pitched all nine innings versus Buena Vista on Saturday, April 13th in a shutout effort. He struck out a season high nine batters while allowing no walks and seven hits. Martin's 1.44 ERA and .191 opponents batting average are tops in the Iowa Conference. 

The senior pitcher/second baseman improved his record to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to a team best 1.44. In four starts this season, Martin has went at least seven innings in each and allowed no more than two earned runs. When not pitching, he has started 16 games at second base where he has owns a .975 fielding percentage with only two errors in 81 changes. Martin also has only walked four hitters in 31 1/3 innings pitched.

UP NEXT: The Spartans are scheduled to play at Loras on Tuesday, April 16th at 3:30. The doubleheader is the make-up date for the games postponed on April 9th. The games will be played at Petrakis Field within the McAleece Sports Complex (1801 Admiral Sheehy Drive).
