Spartans Battle #9 Norse

DECORAH, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball faced it's third top-ranked team in a week on Monday. A rain delayed doubleheader to #9-ranked Luther College Norse was finally completed, and it favored the Norse at the end of the day. Luther captured game one by a score of 10-7, and in game two the Norse took the contest by a 9-1 in five innings. 

The Spartans ended a 28 inning non-scoring streak for the Norse by putting up seven earned runs on nine hits. Leading the offensive output was senior Susie Danielewski who finished with a homerun, a double, and three RBI's in three at bats. Laura Magana added two RBI's after a deep double to the centerfield fence. Jennifer Pohlman was stranded on base six times in the loss. UD gave up 10 runs in 13 hits after facing 36 batters.

In game two, the Spartans trailed early 0-3 before adding a run in the fourth inning before the host Norse ended the game early by scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, 9-1. Danielewski was the lone extra base hit in the nightcap by getting a double. UD left on base four runners, Alyssa Larson would be left on base three times. Pitcher Emily Michels took both losses on the mound. The Spartans would end the night with four errors, two in each contest.

UD fell to fourth in the Iowa Conference standings with the sweep. UD is 5-3 on the IIAC and 11-13 overall. They will continue the Iowa Conference season on Saturday, April 20 against the Buena Vista University Beavers who are 2-6 in the IIAC and 11-15 overall.
