Three School Records Fall at IIAC Championships

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Track and Field teams finished the first day of the 2013 Iowa Conference Championships with four student-athletes earning all-conference honors and setting three new school records. The UD men's team is in third place with 45.50 points while the Spartan women are in fifth with 19 points. The action continues on Saturday morning at Loras College with field events at 10:00 am.

The Spartans started the championships in grand fashion with Tyler Dobratz (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) taking second place in the Men's Decathlon with a school record 5,910 points. Dobratz won the Long Jump, Shot Put, and Discuss. Freshman Everett Schwer (Fennimore, Wis./Fennimore) took fifth overall including second place performances in the Shot Put and Discus. The Women's 4x800m Relay team of Hauber, Trinco, Barwick, and Sawyer set a new school record with a time of 10:11.50. The Men's 4x800m Relay team of Busch, Miller, Nevills, and Murray followed with a school record performance of their own finishing in 8:08.49. The previous men's record of 8:14.34 had stood since 1952.
Christopher Watson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) finished the opening day of the championships by earning all-conference honors in the High Jump and Long Jump with third place performances in each. Antwone Lindsey (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) trailed Watson with fourth place performances in each event as well. UD went 3-4-5 in the Long Jump with Tyrone Galvin (Madison, Wis./Madison East) taking fourth in the event. Nikki McKenzie (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Wiliam Fremd) was the UD women's only day one All-IIAC performer with a second place finish in the Long Jump.
In preliminary races, the UD sprinters took control of the 100m Dash by qualifying 1-2-5 with Corey Broussard (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South), Phillip Jones (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood), and Galvin all on their way to the finals on Saturday at 3:00 pm. Jones also ran the fourth fastest prelim time in the 200m Dash to make the finals. Evan Zurbuchan (Hollandale, Wis./Madison West) ran the fourth fastest prelim race in the 110m Hurdles to make the finals on Saturday at 2:30. Tieisha Starks (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) finished sixth in the 100m Dash Prelims to make the finals.
