Spartans Named All-IIAC Baseball

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its All-Conference Teams and major awards for the 2013 baseball season. Wartburg College senior Ryan Doty has been named the 2013 Iowa Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year, while Coe College senior outfielder Nick Stein has been named the 2013 IIAC Baseball Position Player of the Year. Joel Holst, head coach of league champion Wartburg, received honors as the 2013 IIAC Baseball Coach of the Year.

University of Dubuque senior outfielder/pitcher Spencer Kuehn (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills) has been named First Team All-IIAC Outfielder. Kuehn led UD in batting average (.317), hits (38), RBI (24), and on base percentage (.362).  In IIAC only games, he finished fourth with 20 RBI. On the mound, he finished with a team high three wins, 43 strikeouts, and five complete games. In 56 1/3 innings pitched, Kuehn held opposing hitters to a .227 batting average. The senior is the first Spartan to earn All-IIAC since 2008 and first outfielder to earn the award since 2003.

Seniors Jordan Gawronski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) and Nick Martin (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) were Second Team  All-IIAC selections. Gawronski, an All-IIAC Outfielder hit .299 and posted a .357 on base percentage in IIAC games with 24 starts.

Martin, a four-year starter at second base, finished the year with a .985 fielding percentage and did not commit an error in 18 straight games (62 chances) to end the year. In addition, Martin returned to the mound this season to pick up three wins, post a 3.33 ERA, and held opposing hitter to a .226 batting average. Martin departs UD having played the second most games in school history with 152 games played. He is also second all-time in assists (344), fifth in hit by pitches (16), eighth in hits (127), and ninth in runs scored (77).

Josh Eastman (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) was selected Honorable Mention Starting Pitcher. Eastman led UD in ERA (2.86), Wins (3), Innings Pitched (56 2/3), Appearances (10), Games Started (9), and Complete Games (5). His 2.86 ERA was seventh in the Iowa Conference.

The UD senior class of Chris Briggs, Michael Campbell, Andrew Danna, Kyle Duggan, Jordan Gawronski, Brock Grubbs, Landon Klostermann, Spencer Kuehn, Aaron Laskowski, Noah Mahlik, Nick Martin, Max Nank, and Mitch Windle finished with a combined 995 games played over the last four years at UD.
