Carter Nominated for Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

DUBUQUE, IOWA - University of Dubuque senior long snapper Tyson Carter (Port Elgin, Ontario/Saugeen District Secondary) has been named one of a record 151 nominees for the 2013 Good Works Team as announced by Allstate Insurance Company and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). College Football’s top community service award, the award recognizes a select group of student-athletes who have made a commitment to enriching the lives of others while contributing to the greater good of their communities. Carter is one of six nominees from Iowa college/universities.
Carter is a Biology/Pre-Professional Health Science major with a 3.97 grade point average. Playing primarily on special teams as the long snapper, he is responsible for all snaps on extra points, field goals, and punts. A two-time Academic All-Iowa Conference honoree (must be a sophomore or above with a minimum grade point average of 3.5), Carter was also named First Team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District in 2012. He has been named to the Dean’s List every semester at UD.
Examples of the service work Carter has done in the community includes acting as the campus coordinator for the Special Olympics event hosted on campus, co-chaired Relay for Life in Port Elgin, assisting with special teams camps for high schoolers in Canada, and volunteering to read books to at-risk elementary students at Sageville Elementary. He was also selected as a Chlapaty Science Fellowship honoree to conduct research with campus faculty in horticulture. On campus, he is an active member of the Science Club and works as a Math Tutor in the Academic Success Center.
The official Good Works Team is comprised of 22 members and will be announced in September. There will be 11 winners from Division I FBS and an 11 member team with representatives from DI FCS, DII, DIII, and NAIA.
Carter’s selection marks the fourth straight year that a Spartan has been selected as an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team nominee. Wyatt Hanus was selected in 2012 while Michael Zweifel was chosen in 2010 and 2011.
Since 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team has honored college football players at all levels of the sport for their selfless acts of giving back to the community and off-the-field achievements. These student-athletes represent the sport’s finest in the areas of volunteerism and leadership amongst their peers.
“Through their commitment to service and helping others, this impressive group of student-athletes has shown that ‘good works’ extend beyond the football field,” said Cynthia Whitfield, field senior vice president of Allstate’s Southern region and a member of the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team voting panel. “The positive impact these young athletes have on their communities is an inspiration to us all and another reason to celebrate the good happening in our communities.”
While tackles and touchdowns earn accolades on-the-field, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team shines a light on the stories of good taking place outside the sport of football that often go unnoticed. It is those student-athletes who have dedicated countless hours towards helping others who have been nominated by their respective colleges and universities for this prestigious honor.
“With a record number of nominees submitted this year for the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, it is obvious that our country’s collegiate football programs are producing great student-athletes,” said Grant Teaff, AFCA Executive Director. “The AFCA is proud to partner with Allstate for a sixth consecutive year in honoring these outstanding student-athletes.”
