Spartans Among 148 Track & Field All-Academic Teams

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The  U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), announced Tuesday. the 2013 Division III All-Academic Track & Field teams. The University of Dubuque was one of 148 institutions earned the distinction as a result of earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.10 or higher.

Pomona Pitzer was the top team in Division III with a cumulative 3.686 mark, the Spartans women's team finished the year with a 3.34 team cumulative GPA for head coach Chad Gunnelson. The Iowa Conference was well represented with UD, Coe Loras, Luther, SImpson, and Wartburg all making the academic list of 148 schools to be honored with this award. 

Freshman Payton Hanson (Dodgeville, Wis./Dodgeville HS) was honored individually for being named a Scholar Athlete, a total of 232 men from 92 institutions earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined efforts in competition and in the classroom. He is a psychology major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.71 for the Spartans.

The University of Dubuque Track and Field teams finished the 2013 Iowa Conference Outdoor Championships with 17 Spartans earning all-conference honors including Men’s 100m Dash Champion Corey Broussard (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) and the Men’s 4x100m Relay team also taking first place. Head Coach Chad Gunnelson was named Men’s Co-Coach of the Year. The Spartans men’s team finished fourth overall with 117 points. The UD women’s team took sixth place with 50 points.

UD women earned All-Iowa Conference three times in field events with Nikki McKenzie (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) leading the way with second place finishes in the Long Jump and Triple Jump. Brenda Breimon (Oconomowoc, Wis./Slinger) became the first women in school history to earn All-IIAC in Pole Vault with her second place finish.
