Women's Soccer Wins on Penalty Kick

GRINNELL, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Soccer team overcame temperatures over 100 degrees on the field to come away with a 1-0 win on Friday night. The only goal of the game came on a Spartans penalty kick in the first half. The 1-0 win for UD was the fourth straight over Grinnell College.

The games only score came during the 32nd minute of the first half when the Spartans were award a penalty kick after being tackled in the box. Senior forward Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) stepped up and scored to give UD the eventual game winning goal. A First Team All-IIAC Performer and Third Team NSCAA All-Region in 2012, the goal was Watkins 31st as a Spartan.

Returning after missing the entire 2012 season, goalkeeper Tiffany Duncan (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union) made six saves to earn the shutout. 

Freshman Amelia Kratz (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead), Jamie Spate (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North), Riley Mayer (Racine, Wis./Union Grove), Alora Esparza (Silvis, Ill./United Township), Mattie Stone (Davis Junction, Ill./Stillman Valley), and Brianna Burkhart (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) all made their college debuts in the game. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will play St. Mary's University of Minn. (0-0) at home on Oyen Field on Sunday, September 1st at 2:00 pm. UD won at SMU last season by the score of 2-1.
