Watkins Named IIAC Performer of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Loras College women's soccer player Kinsey Campbell and Luther College men's soccer player Peter Wright have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 1, 2013. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week for seven fall sports.
University of Dubuque senior Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) was named IIAC Women’s Soccer (Offensive) Performer of the Week. Watkins started the week with the game winning goal on a penalty kick in the Spartans 1-0 season opening win against Grinnell. In the second game of the week, she scored the first goal of the game and assisted on two others in the 3-1 victory versus St. Mary’s. Watkins six-point week moved her into fifth place all-time at UD for career points with 77 points (32-goals, 13-assists).
The Spartans are currently ranked 10th in the NSCAA Women’s Soccer Division III North Region Poll after their 2-0 start. An experienced squad, UD starts one senior, eight juniors, one sophomore, and one freshman.
Watkins was named Third Team NSCAA All-North Region and First Team All-Iowa Conference in 2012. Previously she was named Second Team All-IIAC in 2011 and First Team All-IIAC in 2010 as a freshman. The senior forward has now earned Iowa Conference Women’s Soccer (Offensive) Performer of the Week four times.
