Spartans Remain Undefeated with Overtime Win

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Soccer team remained undefeated to start the 2013 season with an overtime victory on Sunday afternoon. The 3-2 victory against Marian University (1-2) was the 125th overall victory for the program and Head Coach Jason Berna. Katie Lynn (Fox River Grove, Ill./Barrington) scored her second goal of the game in overtime for the game winner. The Spartans improved to 4-0 on the season. 

The Spartans continued thier hot streak with two early goals to take control of the contest. The UD scoring began with Lynn scoring her first goal of the season off a cross from deep in the corner off the foot of Megan Siepler (La Canada, Calif./La Canada).

Dubuque continued to push forward after forcing a Sabre turnover near midfield. Melanie Prudhomme (Lakemoor, Ill./Wauconda) dribbled down the sideline pushing forward before passing into the box for Liz Frazier (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North). Frazier quickly gained control and beat the keeper to give UD a 2-0 lead.

Marian answered with a goal just before half to send the teams into the break at 2-1. UD held a 11-3 lead in shots and 7-2 advantage in corner kicks in the first half. 

Marian scored the only goal of the second period 20 seconds into the half. Each team had five shots on goal during the second half. 

Lynn ended things quickly in overtime with a header in the 93rd minute of play. Melissa Sawyer (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) assisted on the goal. 

Tiffany Duncan (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union) earned the win to improved to 4-0 on the season as she finished with five saves in goal. 

UD is currently the top scoring team in the Iowa Conference with 14 goals. Dubuque also sits 1-2-3 in individual scoring with Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) first with 13 points (5-goals/3-assists), Siepler second with 12 points (4-goals/4-assists), and Lynn third with 7 points (2-goals/3-assists).  

The Spartans have won 12 of their last 14 games dating back to last season.
