Volleyball Opens at Home with Victory

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team opened their home season tonight with a warm, hard fought 3-2 victory over the Augustana College Vikings.

UD dropped the opening two sets 26-24 before rallying to take the final three sets 25-18, 25-23, 18-16. Stoltz Sports Center was the hottest place to be Tueday evening as outside temperatures rose to uncomfortable levels. Inside Stoltz was even warmer for the large crowd in attendance. Klaudia Baseriak (So., Hainseville, Ill.) led all hitters with 22 kills with teammates Amy Tranel (Jr., MH, Hazel Green, Wis.) ending with 14 kills and Anna Runge (Fr., MH, Davenport, Iowa) 10 kills. Morgan Werkheiser (Sr., DS, Stockton, Ill.) led the Spartans defensive effort with 28 digs, she was one of four Spartans in finish the night with double digits in digs.

Meggie Schmidt (Jr., S, Edgerton, Wis.) split time with Hannah Zieser (Fr., S, Edgewood, Iowa) setting and the pair would add 27 and 23 set assists respectively helping UD to a 4-4 overall record.

The Spartans will travel to Aurora University on Sept. 14 for a triangual which also includes Rockford University. UD returns home to open the Iowa Conference season on Sept. 18 Vs. The Loras College Duhawks at 7:30 p.m.
