BOX SCORE

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Men's Soccer team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon at home against Illinois Wesleyan. The Spartans 3-1 win over IWU was the 53rd for Head Coach Brad Johnson making him the winningest coach in the programs 13 year history. Dubuque is now 1-3-1 on the year.

After a back and forth first 40 minutes of play, the Spartans Gonzalo Hernandez Cascante (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Internacional Kolbe) was able to give UD a 1-0 lead with his first collegiate goal on a free kick from outside the box. Hernandez was able to beat the keeper on a shot to the upper left hand side of the goal that bent around the IWU wall of defenders. Illinois Wesleyan scored with less than two minutes remaining in the first half to send the team into halftime tied at 1-1.

Senior Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) scored the eventual game winning goal in the 59th minute on a feed from Hernandez. After Hernandez controlled a loose ball in the box, he found Winkler with a defender on his back. Winkler then spun around and hit a liner into the back of the net.

After fending off a flury of shots from IWU, the Spartans scored an insurance goal in the 85th minute when Jack Stefanski (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) scored on a free kick from near midfiled.

Jose Resendiz (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) earned the win with three saves and one goal allowed. The UD defense was able to stop all seven Ill. Wesleyan corner kick opportunities.
