BOX SCORE

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Men's Soccer team opened the 2013 Iowa Conference regular season with the defending champions on Saturday afternoon at Oyen Field. The Spartans have a good measuring stick in which to view the remainder of their season after a 2-0 loss to Loras, a national semifinalist in 2012. UD went toe-to-toe with Loras for the final 70 minutes after two Duhawk goals between the 15 and 19 minute mark of the first half. Dubuque is 1-7-1 overall and 0-1-0- in the Iowa Conference.

The Spartans went down 1-0 after Loras capitalized on a breakaway opportunity when UD goalkeeper Jose Resendiz (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) slipped on a goal kick attempt leaving the defense out of position for the counter-attack. Loras would score again at the 18:46 mark to take a 2-0 lead. Dubuque would hold Loras without a shot on goal for the next 58 minutes as they tried to claw back into the game.

UD finished with a season high 18 shots and 10 corner kicks in the game. Freshman Gonzalo Hernandez (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Internacional Kolbe) led UD with four shots. Midfielder Jon Hazelwonder (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) had two shots on goal. Andrew Guelle (Breckenheim, Germany/Heidelberg) came off the bench to register three shots.

Resendiz finished with three saves.

The Spartans have played arguably one of the nations toughest schedules with all nine opponents having a record of .500 or better including two teams that have not lost. Three of toughest teams UD has played are: #5 Loras (8-0-2), #20 UW-Whitewater (8-0-0), and St. Thomas University (7-1-2). As a group, the nine opponents have a record of 53-20-11.

UP NEXT: The Spartans host Central College (5-4-1, 0-1-0) on Wednesday, October 2 at 7:00 pm on Oyen Field.
