Double Overtime Loss for Men's Soccer

DECORAH, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Men's Soccer team once again found themselves needing extra time to decide the outcome of a game. The Spartans lost to Luther College 2-1 in two overtimes on Saturday night. UD has played five overtime games already this season. Dubuque is 2-8-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the Iowa Conference.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a goal by Brandon Wiley (Mannheim, Germany/Mannheim), his first of the season. Gonzalo Hernandez (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Internacional Kolbe) assisted on the play. UD went into halftime with a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard and a 5-4 advantage in shots.
UD and Luther played an even second half with the Spartans holding 6-5 lead in shots. Luther scored in the 70th minute and had two other shots on goal in the period. The first overtime period was all defense with neither team putting a shot on goal.
Luther scored in the third minute of the second overtime after a Dubuque foul.
Hernandez, Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley), Zachary Matuszak (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North), and Alassane Doukoure (Abidjan, Ivory Coast/Baumholder) all finished with a team high two shots.
Jose Resendiz (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) had four saves in 103:41 minutes in goal.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will host Grinnell College on October 9th on Oyen Field. Game time is 7:30 pm.
