Spartans at SMU Cardinal Invitational

WINONA, MINNESOTA - The University of Dubuque Volleyball team took part in the inaugural SMU Cardinal Invitational, hosted by St. Mary's University on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The Spartans opened the weekend with a 3-1 win over Augustana before losing to #10 St. Benedict in their second match of the day. UD would lose both matches on Saturday 3-0 against St. Mary's and #19 Augsburg.

Katelyn Herbig (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic) was named to the All-Tournament Team. She finished the weekend with 20-kills, .283-attack percentage, and 5-total blocks (1-solo, 4-assisted). Other members of the All-Tournament team were: Lexi Alm (St. Benedict), Lexi Assimos (SMU), Mary Nordick (SMU), Colleen Ourada (Augsburg), Ashley Peper (Augsburg), and Lexi Rindi (St. Benedict). Teams competing in the tournment were Augsburg, Augustana, Central, Dubuque, St. Benedict, St. Mary's, and UW-Eau Claire.

The Spartans opened the weekend with a 3-1 win against Augustana in which each of the first three sets was decided by three points or less. UD held Augie to a .116 hitting percentage. Freshman Brianna Bautsch (Galena, Ill./Galena) led the offense with 16 kills and a .316 hitting percentage. Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) assisted on 37 of the 52 team kills. Nicole Toro (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland) had a season high six aces in the match. Five Spartans finished with double digit digs with Morgan Werkheiser (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) leading the way with 20 digs. Dubuque finished the second set with 16 kills and only five errors. UD has beaten Augustana twice this year and four of the last five meetings.

UD finished the night with a tough test against Saint Benedict, the 10th ranked team in the AVCA Poll. Werkheiser led the Spartans with two aces and six digs. Bautsch and Herbig each had six kills. Olivia Larson (Moline, Ill./Moline) had a team high eight digs while Schmidt finished with 10 assists.

Dubuque opened Day 2 with a 3-0 loss to Saint Mary's. The Spartans used a balanced attack on offense with Jen Pohlman (West Branch, Iowa/West Branch) leading the team with nine kills and a .421 attack percentage. Bautsch finished with eight kills while Herbig had seven kills. Schmidt had a hand in 29 of the Spartans 34 kills with 26 assists and three kills. Werkheiser led UD with 16 digs. Amy Tranel (Hazel Green, Wis./Southwestern) had five block assists.

Things did not get any easier for UD in their last match of the weekend with AVCA #19 Augsburg College handing the Spartans a 3-0 defeat. Schmidt finished with a team high 11 assists and six digs. Hannah Zieser (Edgewood, Iowa/Edgewood-Colesburg) had eight assists as UD finished the match with assists on all 25 team kills. Bautsch had six kills. Herbig hit .375 with four kills and one error in eight total attacks.
