Hernandez Named Iowa Conference Performer of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Coe College volleyball player Rachel Schaefer and Simpson College football player Taylor Nelson have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 13, 2013. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in six fall sports — football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's cross country.

University of Dubuque freshman Gonzalo Hernandez (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Internacional Kolbe) was named IIAC Men’s Soccer (Offensive) Performer of the Week. Hernandez scored two game winning goals to help UD to a 2-0 record in the week. He started the week by scoring the golden goal in overtime against Grinnell in the UD 1-0 victory. Hernandez scored the eventual game winning goal on a penalty kick in the Spartans 2-1 win against Coe.

Hernandez has scored three goals during his freshman campaign. He also has a team high two assists as he has had a hand in five of the Spartans 14 goals this year. UD has won three of their last four games and have a 2-2 record in Iowa Conference play.
