Spartans Lose to #14 Wartburg

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Men's Soccer team once again found themselves matched up with one of the nations top teams. The Spartans pushed #14 Wartburg to the very end but lost 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. UD held Wartburg without a shot on goal in the first half. Dubuque is 4-9-1 overall and 2-3 in the Iowa Conference. 

The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the second half with Jon Hazelwonder (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) and Gonzalo Hernandez (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Internacional Kolbe) teaming up for the goal. After a loose ball, Hernandez split the Wartburg defense and left a pass for Hazelwonder behind the Knights. Hazelwonder took a quick touch before crossing up the Wartburg keeper for a UD goal in the 50th minute of action. 

Wartburg tied the game in the 69th minute on a header before taking a 2-1 lead on a free kick in the 85th minute. 

UD nearly tied the game in the 88th minute as a Brandon Wiley (Mannheim, Germany/Mannheim) header went wide of the goal. 

Jose Resendiz (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) finished with two saves and two goals allowed in the loss.
