UD Wrestling Ranked 25th in NWCA Coaches Poll

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Wrestling team is ranked 25th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Preseason Division III Poll. The Spartans are coming off a 2012-13 season in which they finished with a 10-8 overall record and tied for third place in the Iowa Conference at 4-3. UD returns three National Qualifiers and four All-Iowa Conference honorees.
The Spartans leading returner is junior Brian Travis (St. Petersburg, Fla./Northside Christian) at 141 lbs. Travis won the 141 title at the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships. He is currently ranked #3 in the NWCA and d3wrestle.com Individual Rankings. He finished last season with a 17-10 record and three pins.
Also returning after competing at the DIII Championships is junior Joe Kubica (Lake Park, Ill./Lake Park). Kubica took third place at the Central Region Championships and finished the year with a 21-13 record and four pins. He is ranked #9 by d3wrestle.com and #10 by the NWCA.
Eric Powell (Lombard, Ill./Montini Catholic) also returns after a trip to the national tournament in 2012-13. Powell, a sophomore, came on late in the season to finish third at the Central Region Championships.
Joining Kubica, Powell, and Travis on the All-Iowa Conference Wrestling team was senior Derek Mizaur (Sherrard, Ill./Sherrard). Mizaur finished the year with a 28-10 record and took fourth place at the Central Region Championships (the top three finishers qualified for the national tournament).
Freshman Logan Staver (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) looks to make an immediate impact at 197 lbs for the Spartans. Staver went undefeated on his way to an Illinois 1A Championship at 182 lbs as a senior.
The Spartans open the 2013-14 season on November 9th at the Loras Open.
