Winkler with Hat Trick in Senior Day Win

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Men's Soccer team continued its strong finish to the 2013 regular season with a 4-0 victory against Buena Vista (4-13-0-6). The Spartans have won four of their last five games while outscoring their opponents 10-4 in those games. Senior Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) scored three goals on Senior Day. Dubuque is 6-9-1 overall, 3-3 in the Iowa Conference, and 5-4 on Oyen Field. 

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead on a goal by Winkler in the 7th minute of action. Fellow senior Abraham Gonzalez (Santa Paula, Calif./Santa Paula) assisted on the goal with a cross from the endline to Winkler in front of the goal. Winkler scored again at the 22:05 mark after Jon Hazelwonder (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) controlled a loose ball in the box and fed Winkler to put UD ahead 2-0. 

Alassane Doukoure (Abidjan, Ivory Coast/Baumholder) put UD up 3-0 on a header off a Gonzalo Hernandez Cascante (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Internacional Kolbe) cross in the 28th minute. UD went into halftime with a 3-0 lead on the scoreboard and a 11-6 advantage in shots. 

Winkler finished the scoring with his third goal of the game in the 58th minute. The goal by Winkler was his team high seventh of the season. Brandon Wiley (Mannheim, Germany/Mannheim) assisted on the goal.  UD held Buena Vista without a shot on goal in the second half while holding a 15-2 advantage in shots. 

Jose Resendiz (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) earned the win with two saves in 66:11 minutes in goal. Senior Jake O'Rourke (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gormon) completed the shutout with a scoreless 23:49 in goal. 

UD held a 26-8 advantage in shots for the game while playing 26 Spartans played in the contest. 

Winkler lead UD with seven shots, four shots on goal, and three goals. Billy Belmonte (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) had six shots off the bench. 

Before the game, seniors Gonzalez, O'Rourke, Winkler, and Lionel Salazar (Sun Valley, Calif./James Monroe) were honored as part of the Senior Day activities. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will travel to Simpson College (10-6-2, 3-3) for their last regular season game of the season on October 29th. Game time in Indianola is 7:00 pm. The winner of the game will earn the four seed in the Iowa Conference Tournament and the right to host the games loser in a rematch.
