Women’s Basketball Picked Fifth in IIAC Coaches Preseason Poll

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Iowa Conference Coaches Preseason Poll. The Spartans set a school record with 20 wins last season while advancing to the IIAC Tournament Championship Game. UD returns four starters from last season record setting team.

The Spartans open the 2013-14 season on Saturday, November 16th at the Edgewood College Tipoff Tournament in Madison, Wis. Dubuque opens with UW-Platteville at 5:00 pm. UD returns to action on Sunday with Edgewood at 4:30 pm. 

The top returning scorer for UD is junior guard Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) at 9.3 points per game. An Honorable Mention All-Iowa Conference selection last season, Schmidt came off the bench to spark the second unit with a team high 42 three-pointers. A two-way performer, her 54 steals last season were the fourth highest single season total in the UD history. Schmidt teamed with current UD graduate assistant coach Mollie Whiting to form the conferences top scoring duo at 33.1 points per game. 

Returning starters in the post are Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) and Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona). Remakel led the Spartans with 174 rebounds, 58-blocks, and field goal percentage at 51.9%. Springer finished the year shooting 81.4 % (35-43) from the free throw line. 

Bringing experience to Coach Noll's three-guard attack are senior Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) and junior Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead). Goetz finished the year with 6.6 ppg, 81 rebounds, 47 assists, 46 steals, and 18 blocks in 26 games played. Fischer started 27 games last year. 

Newcomers looking to provide the Spartans with added depth in 2013-14 are transfers Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and Brittany Collier (Oswego, Oswego). UD will also be looking to a pair of freshman to provide quality minutes with Deneshia Snitker (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) and Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) expected to play big minutes. 

UD set school records in 2012-13 with 20 wins, 1950 points, 1770 field goals attempted, 340 steals, and nine consecutive wins. The Spartans started the season with a school best 10-1 record and finished with the programs first trip to the Iowa Conference Tournament Finals.
