Spartans Open Home Season with 91-81 Victory

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's basketball collected their third win of the season in their home opener on Tuesday night over the Monmouth College Fighting Scots by a 91-81 victory.

Fans witnessed a dawn of a new era with regards to new rules installed since last March Madness. Any contact is automatically called a foul in 2013-14. Tuesday night the Spartans shot the same amount of free throws as they did shots in the contest (53). UD sank 34-53 free throw attempts and ended the over two hour contest sinking 25-53 shot attempts from the floor.

Brandon Ferguson led the Spartans with 19 points off the bench. Gage Heffernan and Chris Frazier added 14 points each as Iowa Conference Player of the Week Andre Norris scored 11 points and led both teams with four blocked shots in 23 minutes of action. Heffernan, Norris and Mitch Michaelis all grabbed seven rebounds each in the victory on Jon Davison Court. UD was out rebounded by the Fighting Scots 45-41. 

The Spartans shot 47.2% from the field and sank 7-21 three point attempts with Frazier connecting for three. UD's defense held the visiting Fighting Scots to 38.2% from the field and and 27.8% from beyond the three point arc. Both teams finished with 30 points in the paint, but Monmouth held the edge in points off turnovers 14 and in second chance points with 14. UD's bench out scored the Fighting Scots 45-37. UD's largest lead of the night was 14 points with 5:47 to go in the contest. The Spartans improved to 3-0 overall.

The Spartans continue their road schedule this weekend at the Carthage College Classic Tournament on Nov. 22-23 in Kenosha, Wis. The Spartans open play at 6:00 p.m. Vs. Benedictine on Friday night.
