Winkler Named All-IIAC Men's Soccer

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Loras senior midfielder Kevin Cavers has been named the 2013 IIAC Men's Soccer Offensive Most Valuable Player, Wartburg senior defender Bob Brown has been named the 2013 IIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Most Valuable Player and Wartburg head coach Kirk Artist has been named the 2013 IIAC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year. The Conference also announced the 2013 All-Iowa Conference Men's Soccer Team.

University of Dubuque senior Cory Winkler (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley) has been named Second Team All-Iowa Conference Midfielder. Winkler led the Spartans with seven goals this season. It is the third time he has been selected All-IIAC earning First Team honors in 2011 and Second Team honors in 2012 and 2013. He was sixth in the Iowa Conference at 0.41 goals per game and seventh in the IIAC with 0.88 points per game.

A staple in the lineup for the last four years, Winkler finishes with the fifth highest goal total in UD Men’s Soccer history with 27 goals including six multi-goal games. His 10 game winners are the third most in school history. He played in a total of 71 games with 62 starts, both placing him eighth all-time at UD. As a freshman, Winkler started 11 games and scored four goals as Dubuque won the Iowa Conference Regular Season Championship.

A trio of Spartans earned Honorable Mention All-Iowa Conference with junior Peter Hager (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo), sophomore Jonathan Hazelwonder (Troy, Mo./Buchanan), and freshman Gonzalo Hernandez (Madrid, Spain/Colegio Internacional Kolbe) being selected. Hager was selected Second Team All-IIAC in 2011 and 2012 as a defender. A midfielder, Hazelwonder scored one goal and assisted on another. Hernandez made an immediate impact on the Spartan offense from his forward position with four goals and four assists.

The Spartans finished the 2013 season with a 6-11-1 overall record and 3-4 record in Iowa Conference action. UD qualified for its seventh straight IIAC Tournament. Dubuque played arguably one of the toughest schedules in Division III with four NCAA DIII Tournament qualifiers. UD opponents finished the year with a combined record of 177-125-29 with only 5 of 17 (UD played Simpson twice) having losing records. According to the Bennett Rankings, the Spartans played the 43rd toughest schedule of 411 D-III teams.
