Spartans Win Carthage Classic, Norris Named MVP

KENOSHA, Wis. – The University of Dubuque men’s basketball needed overtime on Saturday to remain unblemished, a perfect 5-0 overall record after winning the Carthage College Classic Championship game 93-89 in OT.

The Spartans rallied from a 23-40 deficit in the first half to outscore Carthage 55-38 in the second half to end the game in regulation knotted 78-78. Chris Frazier helped the Spartans to a point lead after sinking a three pointer with :48 seconds remaining (76-75). The Spartans were called for a foul with :28 left on the clock. Two shot foul by Carthage and they missed the first attempt and tied the game at 76-76.

Mitch Michaelis connected on the jumper to retake the lead 78-76 with :03 remaining. A long throw down court and the Spartans Alex Vogel was called for a foul on a three point attempt with :01 left of regulation. Carthage missed the first and sank the next two free throws to send the game into overtime. In overtime the Spartans trailed early, but battled back to lead by four points throughout the extra period of action.

Andre Norris was named MVP of the weekend tournament after scoring 27 points on Friday night and adding an 18 point performance on Saturday. Joining him on the All-Tourney Team was teammate Chris Frazier who finished Saturday with 28 points after connecting for a game high seven three pointers in the victory. Michaelis added 14 points as Vogel and Gage Heffernan both had 12 points each.

UD shot 47.3% from the field, made 9-21 three point attempts (42.9%) and sank 32-41 free throw attempts (78%). The Spartans were out rebounded 33-41, but held the hosts to 1-7 three point attempts from the field in the second half. Carthage led by as many as 20 points before the Spartans began chipping away at the lead.
