Spartans Explode for School Record 127 Points

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team continued to reach new heights in the scoring department on Friday night. For the third time this season the Spartans have upped the school record for points in a game. The Spartans 127-57 victory against North Central University (Minn) was a total team effort with 17 Spartans scoring and 20 seeing court time. UD improved to 4-3 on the year and scored over 100 for the third time this year. 

The Spartans scored the first points of the game on a Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) layup 49 seconds in and would not trail in the game. Kotas would go on to lead all scorers with 22 points in only 16 minutes of action. UD dominited every aspect of the first half opening up a 62-24 lead at halftime. Dubuque forced 20 turnovers in the half which led to 15 steals and a 40-2 advantage in points off turnovers. UD also had a 20-0 advantage in fast break points. 

UD took over the game with a 16-0 run from the 12:38 to 9:55 stretch of the first half. The run began with a three-pointer from Kotas and ended with a three from Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield). In between Brittany Collier (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) scored four points while Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) and Daneshia Snitker (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) scored three points. Goetz nearly finished with a triple-double in only 16 minutes of play with 12 points, 10 assists, and 7 steals.

Freshman Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) took over the start of the second half with nine of the Spartans first 14 points as UD pushed their lead to 48 at 76-28 within the first two and a half minutes. Fellow freshman Angela Powell (Kaiserslautern, Germany/Kaiserslautern) finished with a team high eight rebounds (4-offensive/4-defensive). 

Fischer and Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) led the UD bench with 10 points each in 13 minutes of playing time. Fischer  also recorded six rebounds, three steals, two assists, and two blocks. Adrianna Stephens (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) also came off the bench for eight points on 4-6 shooting from the field.

Dubuque opened up its largest lead of the game with a three pointers from Maria Miller (Frederic, Wis./Frederic) with five seconds left for the final points of the game at 127-57. Miller was 2-3 from beyond the arc for six points while also pulling
down two rebounds. 

The Spartans finished the game with a 28-0 advantage in fast break points, 30-9 lead in turnovers forced, 60-16 difference in points in the paint, and held a 57-8 advantage in points off turnovers. 

The 2013-14 Spartans set the previous school record for points in a game earlier this season with 112 points against Blackburn on November 26th. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans return to action on Saturday, December 14th against North Central College (Ill.) at 3:00 in Stoltz. The game will feature two of the highest scoring teams in Division-III with NCC ranking first at 96.2 points per game while UD is fourth at 90.6 ppg.
