Spartans Finish 2-0 in Florida with 82-69 Victory

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team finished 2-0 on it's Pre-Christmas break trip at the Basketball Destinations St. Pete Classic at Eckerd College. The Spartans extended their winning streak to four games with a 82-69 victory against Alverno College (7-4) on Saturday afternoon. Junior Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) paced UD with 21 points including six three-pointers. Dubuque moves to 7-3 overall. 

The Spartans would not look back after a three-pointer by Kotas gave UD a 3-0 lead 29 seconds into the game as they did not trail in the game. UD took control of the game at the 13:29 mark of the first half when Heather Chapman (Ingelside, Ill./Grant) made a layup to start a 12-0 run over the next three minutes. Dubuque continued to get open looks with Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) and Adrianna Stephens (Madison, Wis./LaFollette) converting layups before back-to-back threes by Kotas gave UD a 28-13 lead. Stephens led the Spartans bench with nine points in the game. 

Dubuque closed the first half on a 9-2 run over the last three minutes with Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) scoring four of her 16 total points in the stretch. Brinker also pulled down eight rebounds (7-defensive/1-offensive) in the game. UD led 49-28 at the break with a 10-2 advantage in steals. 

A four point play by Brinker at the 17:53 mark of the second half gave UD its biggest lead of the game at 58-32. Alverno responded with a 17-2 run to cut the Dubuque lead to 11 with under 14 minutes to play in the game. The Inferno cut the UD lead to 10 with 8:34 left but the Spartans would respond and never allow the lead to reach single digits. 

Despite foul trouble, Daneshia Snitker (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds (4-offensive/4-defensive) in 13 minutes of action. The Spartans were led defensively by Jessica Goetz (Arrowhead, Wis./Sussex) with five steals. Goetz also led UD with five assists. 

UD finished with a 31-10 advantage in points off the bench. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans finish the 2013 calendar year with a trip to North Park University (6-4) on Tuesday, December 31st. Game time in Chicago is 2:00 pm.
