Spartans Rally from Behind to Beat the Dutch

PELLA- Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's basketball faced a tough opponent on their home court and rallied from a nine point halftime deficit to defeat the Central College Dutch 74-67. The win maintained the Spartans unbeaten record which now stands at 13-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Every time the Spartans take the court, their opponents have a bullseye on them. Saturday was no different as the Dutch shot above 43% in the first half to lead at the break 35-26. It was just the third time this season the Spartans have trailed after the opening half of play. The Dutch led by as much as 12 points in the first half.

Both squads shot extremely well from the free throw line missing just 4-41 attempts in the game. Central made 19-20 attempts (95%) and UD sank 18-21 attempts (85.7%). The game was tied six times and the lead swapped six times. The Spartans and the Dutch were very balanced: both teams rebounded 39 misses, Central out scored UD in the paint 32-28, but UD out scored the Dutch in points off turovers 18-15.

A trio of Spartans finished in double digit scoring with Gage Heffernan leading with 22 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Andre Norris led rebounding with nine and had 19 points, and five assists. Chris Frazier added 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, and went over 1,000 points in his UD career. Nine Spartans entered the scoring column as 13 saw action on the floor. Brandon Ferguson led the bench with five points.

The Spartans made 24-62 attempts from the field (38.7%) and connected on 8-22 three point attempts (36.4%). UD will host the Luther Norse (8-5 overall, 0-2 in IIAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 15 with an 8:00 p.m. tip off. 

The University of Dubuque will be broadcast "Live" on KCRG 9.2 ABC affiliate in Cedar Rapids on January 29th when they host the Simpson College Storm on Jon Davison Court in Stoltz Sports Center at 8:00 p.m.
