Spartans Remain Perfect in IIAC Action

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team continued its strong start to the Iowa Conference season with a 26 point victory on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans 91-65 victory against Buena Vista University (6-9, 0-4 IIAC) was their seventh straight IIAC regular season victory. Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) finished the game with 12 points on six of seven shooting while also pulling down four rebounds and blocking two shots. UD is now 11-4 overall and 4-0 in the IIAC. 

The Spartans started the game red hot from the field making their first five shots to open up a 13-2 lead in the first three minutes. Jenny Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) opened and closed the run with three-pointers while Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) made a pair of fast break layups. Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) also made a three-pointer as UD forced an early timeout from Buena Vista.  

Dubuque opened up its largest lead of the first half at the 7:22 mark on a jumper by Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) that made the score 35-18. UD went into halftime with a 49-36 lead thanks in part to a 16-2 advantage in bench points. 

Buena Vista scored the first four points on the second half to cut the UD lead to nine, which would be the only time in the half that the Spartans would not have a double digit lead. UD responded with an 8-0 run with layups by Daneshia Snitker (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon), Kotas, Springer, and Remakel to regain the momentum. Snitker scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in the game.

Kotas led the Spartans in scoring with 17 points including three first half three-pointers. Goetz and Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) had a team high six rebounds. 

On the defensive end of the court, UD forced 17 turnovers and blocked a season high 11 shots. Goetz led Dubuque with three blocks while Remakel, Brittany Collier (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and Angela Powell (Kaiserslautern, Germany/Kaiserslautern) all blocked two shots.

An 7-0 run late in the game pushed the Spartans lead to 27 points at 88-61 with 3:03 left in the game. Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) scored five straight points to start the run. and Molly Richardson (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) scored the final two points to give UD its largest lead of the game.

UD has won four of the last five meetings versus Buena Vista and four straight meetings on Jon Davison Court inside Stoltz Sports Center.
