BOX SCORE

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The scoreboard did not tell the entire story for the University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team on Wednesday night. Despite an eight point loss, UD was within one as late as the four minute mark of the second half while the game also featured nine lead changes and 13 tied game situations. The Spartans 85-77 loss to Coe was their first of the conference season. Dubuque is 11-5 overall and 4-1 in the Iowa Conference.

Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led the Spartans offensively with 23 points and 10 rebounds (five-offensive/five-defensive), her first double-double of the season. Since scoring a season low five points against Wartburg, Kotas has increased her point total in each of the last four games. She scored 11 at Central, 14 vs. Luther, 17 vs. Buena Vista, and 23 tonight at Coe.

UD jumped out to its largest lead of the contest with a 12-4 run in the first six minutes of the game. Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) started the scoring with a layup on the Spartans second possesion of the game which led to six straight points from Kotas and a 8-2 advantage. Coe responded with 11 unanswered points to take their first lead of the game at the midway point of the first half. The teams exchanged baskets for the rest of the first half with Coe holding a 32-30 lead at halftime.

The first eight minutes of the second half was a back-and-forth battle as each team led with UD having a 50-48 lead after a pair of free throws by Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead). A 10-0 run by Coe was immediately answered with a 8-0 run by UD that tied the game up at 58-58 with less than eight minutes to play. Remakel finished with six rebounds and three blocks to lead the Dubuque defense.

Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) did a little bit of everything in the game finishing with 11 points, eight rebounds (two-offensive/six-defensive), six assists, three steals, and one block. Springer was the third Spartan in double figures with 10 points.

UP NEXT: The Spartans play crosstown rivals and IIAC leading Loras College (10-6, 5-0 IIAC) on Saturday, January 25th. Game time at Loras is 4:00 pm.
