UW-Whitewater Faculty Piano Trio to Perform in University of Dubuque’s Heritage Center

The University of Dubuque Department of Fine and Performing Arts will host the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Faculty Piano Trio in Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall on Thursday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. Members of the trio include UW-Whitewater faculty members Leanne League (violin), Benjamin Whitcomb (cello), and Myung Hee Chung (piano).

The Faculty Piano Trio at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is one of the music department’s flagship faculty chamber music ensembles, and has been performing with its current membership for eight years. Primarily focusing on the major works of the piano trio repertoire, the group performs on and off campus and is heard frequently on the “Live from the Chazen” concert series, broadcast live on Wisconsin Public Radio. Trio members are also heavily involved in coaching student chamber music groups at UW-Whitewater as well as students of various music programs throughout the upper Midwest. The group is also frequently joined by various guest artists to perform other trios, quartets, and quintets.
The trio will feature two contrasting Romantic works at their performance, the first being Robert Schumann's Piano Trio No. 2. Though set in traditional German musical forms, the piece is recognized for its adventurous harmonic surprises. The second piece they will perform is Piano Trio Op. 3 by the under-appreciated French composer Ernst Chausson. Contrasting greatly from Schumann’s work, this trio is from a very different musical world – it is a serious, even brooding work that shows the influence of Chausson’s teacher César Franck, a composer known for his formidable improvisation skills and tendency toward frequent modulation.
