Spartans Face #18 Cornell in Wrestling

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The University of Dubuque wrestling team took an early lead over the #18-ranked Cornell College Rams on Friday night, but the host Rams captured the final four matches to claim the dual 24-14 over the Spartans. UD falls to 8-7 overall in dual meets. The Spartans continue their conference season on Saturday, Feb. 1 with a dual at Simpson College at 1:00 p.m.

The Spartans opened with an 8-5 victory by Nicholas Rivera at 125 lbs. and would win four out the opening six matches to surge into the lead of the dual. The Spartans lost just one of the final four matches by more than two points. Manuel Mendoza was battling for a takedown as time ran out at 174 lbs. Derek Minch trailed early in the 184 lbs. match before tying the match in the third period and was working for back points as time expired. The tied match ended in favor of Cornell after collecting a two point takedown. Nathan Cristion lost the 285 lbs. match by just two points, 6-4, as the two active heavyweights would wrestle down to the final seconds of the match.
