Spartans Protect Home Court

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team avenged their loss at Coe from 10 days ago. The Spartans protected their home court with a 65-56 victory against Coe College (10-9, 5-3 IIAC) on Saturday afternoon. All five starters for UD scored at least seven points in a winning effort. Dubuque improves to 12-7 overall and are tied for third place in the Iowa Conference at 5-3. 

The Spartans took control of the game early with a 10-1 run beginning at the 15:40 mark of the first half. The UD second unit was on the court for most of the run with Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) scoring four points in the stretch. Brinker led the Blue and White bench with eight points. After the teams exchanged baskets, a jumper from Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) gave UD its largest lead of the game at 22-10. 

A 12-0 run late in the first half gave Coe a 27-25 lead with under four minutes to play. It would be the last points for the Kohawks in the half as UD held Coe scoreless for the remainder of the half. Schimdt scored the last three points of the half to send UD into the break with a 28-25 lead. 

The balanced scoring attack from Dubuque was led by Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) with 14 points. Schmidt and Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) each scored nine points. Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) and Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) chipped in eight and seven points each.

After a back-and-forth first 12 minutes of the second half in which the score was tied 50-50, UD closed with a 15-6 run for the victory. The Spartans finished 8-10 from the free throw line including six straight at one point. 

Dubuque and Coe each finished with 38 rebounds with Schmidt leading UD with seven boards (two-offensive/five-defensive). Kotas pulled down a team high three offensive rebounds while Remakel finished with six total rebounds. 

Goetz picked up her IIAC leading 55th steal in the game as UD forced 13 turnovers to snap Coe's four game winning streak. 

UD is 7-2 this season on Jon Davison Court inside Stoltz Sports Center. The Spartans are 17-3 at home over the last two seasons. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will hit the road on Wednesday, February 5th with a trip to Wartburg College (8-11, 2-6 IIAC). Game time in Waverly is 6:00 pm. UD has won six of the last seven versus the Knights.
