Spartans Set a Pair of School Records at Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Track & Field team set two school records on Saturday at the Hilltop Invitational on the campus of Cornell College. Each of the records set were improvements on records set earlier this season. Taylor Cary (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) lowered her 60m Hurdles record to 9.45 seconds while Brenda Breimon (Oconomowoc, Wis./Slinger) raised her Pole Vault record to 3.35m (10' 11.75"). The UD women also won two individual events. The Spartans finished in fourth place of nine teams overall.

Cary and Breimon each finished in third place in their respective events in route to their record setting performances. Breimon's highth of 3.35m puts her 39th in Division-III. UD senior Tieisha Starks (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) won the 60m Dash with a time of 8.18 seconds. Nickolette McKenzie (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) also qualified for the finals taking fifth.  Alexis Higgins (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) picked up the Spartans second victory of the meet by clearing 1.55m (5' 1.0") in the High Jump. Amy Tranel (Hazel Green, Wis./Southwestern) finished fourth in the High Jump.

The Spartans also had success in the mid-distance events with Fabiola Ortiz (Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) taking third place in the 800m Run. Her time of 2:27.35 was the third fastest time in UD school history. Brittany Burns (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Memorial) finished third in the 400m Dash with a time of 1:04.66 seconds. 

Kirsten Henry (Fennimore, Wis./Fennimore) posted the top Spartans throw performance with a fourth place toss of 11.40m (37' 5.0") in the Shot Put.

UP NEXT: UD will compete at the Grinnell College Invitational on Saturday, February 8th. Field events begin at 10:00 am inside the Charles Benson Bear Recreation and Athletic Center.
