20 Wins for Spartan Men's Basketball

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's basketball team never trailed for the second consecutive game when they captured their 20th win of the season in a 86-75 road victory over the Simpson College Storm (3-18, 1-9 in IIAC) on Saturday. UD improved to 20-1 overall and 9-1 in the Iowa Conference and will return to the comforts of Stoltz Sports Center next week. The Spartans will attempt to avenge their lone loss of the season when they host the Loras College Duhawks (11-10 overall, 4-6 in IIAC) on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 8:00 p.m.

 UD opened the game scoring and would lead by as much as 23 points en route to completing a second season with 20 or more victories for head coach Robbie Sieverding and staff. UD's Chris Frazier led the offense with 21 points after making 7-10 shot attempts. Jacob Mohlis came off the bench to finish with 16 points. He and Frazier would end the night sinking 3-4 three point attempts to help the Spartans finish making 8-16 attempts in the game. Andre Norris added 17 points and eight rebounds and Brandon Ferguson had 14 points. Gage Heffernan was held to five points, but finished with a game high 10 rebounds, all defensive boards. Fourteen Spartans saw playing time and 11 Spartans entered the scoring column.

UD sank 28-62 shot attempts (45.2%) and made 22-29 free throw attempts (75.9%). The Spartans will look to continue their winning and capture their 10th conference victory Wednesday on Jon Davison Court when they host Loras. The last time the two met, Loras pulled the upset when Aaron Schueller lit the Spartans for 25 points en route to the 76-66 Duhawk win. 

Four out of the six Iowa Conference tournament qualifiers are now set. Luther and Buena Vista punched their tickets on Saturday night. The Spartans have just four games left of the conference season. The upcoming week welcomes Loras on Feb. 12 and Central College (15-6, 8-2 in IIAC) on Feb. 15. UD will end their regular season on two tough road trips. The Spartans travel to Storm Lake to face the Buena Vista University Beavers on Feb. 19 and journey to Decorah to face the Luther College Norse in their final IIAC game on Feb. 22. 

The Iowa Conference Tournament begins on Feb. 25, the semifinals are on Feb. 27, and the IIAC Tournament Championship being hosted at the highest remaining seed of the tournament on March 1.
