Spartans Lose to Alum Stewart

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Men's Tennis team began the 2014 season on Saturday morning inside the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center. UD lost 5-4 to former Spartan Austin Stewart and his St. Ambrose team in Head Coach Claudio Giraldi's first match at the helm. Nick Garcia (Leimen, Germany/Heidelberg) and  Nikolay Gospodinov (Mons, Belgium/SHAPE America) went 2-0 on the day. 

Garcia was dominating at #1 singles posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory after teaming with Dishon Deering (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs) to win 8-7 at #1 doubles.

UD led 2-1 after doubles action with the Spartans winning at #1 and #2 doubles. The duo of Gospodinov and Andrew Drummond (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) won 8-6.

Giraldi and Stewart were teammates in 2008 and 2009. The pair went 1-2 in doubles play together in 2009. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans open Iowa Conference action on Saturday, February 15th at Buena Vista beginning at 9:00 am. UD will also face Augustana College (SD) at Buena Vista at 1:00 pm.
