Spartans Send Seniors Out on High Note

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team came out fired up with three seniors in the starting lineup for their last regular season game in Stoltz Sports Center. The Spartans shot a red hot 53.3% (24-45) while holding Central to 32.1% (17-53) from the field in the 68-53 win. The top scorer for UD with 15 points was Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) for the 11th straight game. Dubuque is 15-8 overall and in fourth place in the Iowa Conference (IIAC) at 8-4. The Spartans are guaranteed a home game in the 2014 IIAC Tournament. 

The Spartans senior class of Heather Chapman (Ingleside, Ill./Grant), Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield), and Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) have a record of 61-43 in their four years at UD, which ties them with the seniors from last season for most wins in a four year period. The group also has a 33-25 record in IIAC games. Of the three, Remakel has played the most games with today's game being her 91st as Spartan. Fischer leads the group with 261 points.

UD used a balanced scoring attack with five Spartans scoring at least seven points. Kotas was the only Spartan in double figures but Chapman and Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) each chipped in nine points. Making her first start of the season, Fischer scored eight points while shooting 4-4 from the free throw line. Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) also went 4-4 from the line and scored seven points. 

At halftime, UD led 38-30 while shooting 65.2% (15-23).

The largest lead of the game for UD came late in the game when the Spartans went up 16 points with less than two minutes remaining in the game. The UD bench played a big role in the victory by outscoring Central 25-7.

In addition to forcing the Dutch to shoot 32.1%, the Spatans clamped down holding Central to 0-10 shooting from beyond the arch in the second half. UD also forced 20 turnovers with Goetz leading the way with three steals. Remakel fiinished with one block in the game, pushing her total to 44 this year. Remakel also pulled down a team high five rebounds (one-offensive/four-defensive).
