UD Sponsors Charity Fashion Show

Feb 20, 2014 | Kristi Lynch

The University of Dubuque’s Office of Multicultural Student Engagement and the Black Student Union will sponsor a Charity Fashion Show on Saturday, March 8, at 7:00 p.m.  The event will take place in Heritage Center’s Babka Theatre.

“The theme of this year’s show is Flavor of the Caribbean,” commented Mishereen Ellis, director of multicultural student engagement.  “From the moment you arrive you will feel as if you’re on a Caribbean island.  From the ambiance, music, and food, your experience is sure to make you feel, as we say in Jamaica, “Irie”.”

Proceeds from the event will go towards the UD student service trip to Jamaica (March 15-22) as well as Jamaica Jampact Inc., a non-profit organization that aims to influence and improve socio-economic conditions which affect Jamaica and the Jamaican Diaspora by (1) developing social welfare programs, with particular focus on educational initiatives targeting youth, (2) facilitating research, stimulating constructive dialogue, and raising public awareness on topical issues; and (3) providing opportunities and resources to grow and strengthen the network of young professionals, students, and friends of Jamaica.  The organization does this – and more – through their Adopt-A-School Program, Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), and Think Tank Program.  For more information on Jamaica Jampact Inc., please visit www.jampact.org .

Local vendors participating in this year’s show include, DBQ Fashions, Milroy’s Tuxedos, The Children’s Place, Maurices, Zazous Bridal, and the UD Bookstore.  Throughout the night, University of Dubuque students will be performing traditional dances from the Caribbean.

Tickets for the event are $5 for UD students, faculty, and staff; and $7 for members of the Dubuque Community.  Tickets can be purchased through Heritage Center’s Farber Box Office Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; by phone at 563-585-SHOW; or online at www.dbq.edu/heritagecenter.
